Mentoring Tip of the Week...

*Be Mindful of your Mentor/Mentee's Stress Level*

Mentoring is meant to help reduce stress. If you are not aware of the others current stress level; the demand you place on your mentoring partner, or the demand they place on you, could cause more stress.

Has this ever been an issue for you? How do you approach this with your mentoring partner if it becomes an issue?

Mentoring Tip of the Week...

*Consider yourself a co-learner*

Expect to gain as much from your mentoring partner as you provide to them.
Both mentors and mentees can look forward to learning from each other.
What do you expect to gain

Suggested Reading...

Did you know that the Millersville Mentoring Alliance Program has a library of books available for mentors and students to borrow? Check out the list of books currently on the shelves in our office in Chester House.

Also, below we share two interesting reads that we came across recently and hope to add to our library soon. If you're interested in reading either of these, email us, and we'll order them for you to borrow from the MMAP library ASAP...

The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything
by Ken Robinson, Ph.D.

From one of the world’s leading thinkers and speakers on creativity and innovation, a breakthrough book about talent, passion, and achievement.

The element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the element, they feel most themselves and most inspired and achieve at their highest levels. The Element draws on the stories of a wide range of people, from ex-Beatle Paul McCartney to Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons; from Meg Ryan to Gillian Lynne, who choreographed the Broadway productions of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera; and from writer Arianna Huffington to renowned physicist Richard Feynman and others, including business leaders and athletes. It explores the components of this new paradigm: The diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities.

With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier, and that once we have found our path we can help others to do so as well.

Monday Morning Mentoring: Ten Lessons to Guide You Up the Ladder
by David Cotrell

Everyone who wants a fulfilling career needs a mentor -- someone who has seen it all before, someone who can share hard-won experiences and teach valuable lessons.

In this expanded and enhanced version of his best-selling book, Monday Morning Leadership, David Cottrell packs all of the wisdom of his wide-ranging business experience into this inspirational story. Cottrell introduces us to Jeff, a successful corporate manager who has hit a major wall. Jeff has been leading his team, quarter after quarter, to great sales and better profits for several years -- until now. The tricks that used to work wonders have lost their magic; Jeff is in a slump and is at a loss to find his way out of it.

Overworked, stressed, and feeling that his personal and professional lives are at risk, Jeff reaches out to the father of a college buddy, a retired and tremendously accomplished former executive named Tony. Tony and Jeff agree to meet every Monday for ten weeks to work through Jeff's problems and get his career back on track.

If you would like to recommend a book that we should consider adding to the library, let us know by leaving a comment here or emailing us.

Mentoring is Big at Millersville this Fall

Millersville students have been busy getting excited about mentoring this fall semester!

Training Workshops
Ally and Stacy provided mentoring training for students and mentors in the S-STEM Program, the Color of Teaching Program, and PALM. Also, we had a lot of fun at our campus-wide workshops on October 9th. In all, we were thrilled to train 92 NEW mentors and students at these events and also in small groups at our offices in Chester House.
